Utah Defeats Austin 41-22 For Their First Victory Of The Season

The Utah Warriors welcomed Austin Elite Rugby to Zions Bank Stadium for the CBS Sports Game of the Week. Utah almost let their first victory of the season slip through their fingers before they were able to slam the door shut on the Elite.

Timothée Guillimin pushed a penalty kick attempt wide right for Austin for the game's first attempt at points. Kurt Morath was able to convert a penalty kick of his own for the first points of the game. Jared Whippy put a try on the board for the Warriors. Whippy slipped near the try line but was still able to get over for the try.

Paul Lasike was next on the board for the Warriors. Lasike just powered through the Elite defense from close range for the try. Marcus Walsh was able to respond for Austin. He faked a pass and went through a gap in the Warriors defense for the try.

Mike Brown was given a yellow card for a high tackle. Josh Anderson added the third try of the first half for the Warriors. After spending a few minutes deep in Austin territory. Anderson was waiting on the wing for the ball and scored the try.

Austin came out slow and made silly mistakes in the first half. Utah had the majority of the possession in the first half. Utah was able to capitalize on Austin mistakes, but a few times made mistakes of their own.

Hanco Germishuys put his name out there after a quiet first half. After a line break from Andrew Suniula, Germishuys received the offload and was able to dot down after his momentum carried him over the try line in the tackle.

Lote Tu'ipulotu was able to answer back for the Warriors. The Warriors pulled a quick lineout move. They brought the flanker around the lineout and offloaded to Tu'ipulotu who was uncovered for the try. With Austin down by 15 points, they were going to have to go for either a penalty kick and two tries or three tries to comeback. Guillimin elected to go with a penalty kick that was right in front of the sticks.

Another Whippy is on the injury list. Jared Whippy was carted off the field with an air cast on his leg. Whippy went down as Utah was going down the field. Hard luck for the Whippys as they were going to be a key part of this Utah team.

Marcus Walsh was the recipient of a lucky bounce. After a kick through from Ned Hodson bounced off a Utah player, Walsh was there for the clean up and over for his second try of the match. Maika Hafoka took the momentum away from Austin. Austin overthrew their lineout and Hakofa was their for the clean up and was over for the try.

Joseph Nicholls added the sixth and final Warriors try of the match. The ball was kicked through by Utah, and Nicholls was able to kick it further before out sprinting Austin to the ball.

This was Utah's match to give away and they almost did. Utah had the momentum in each half, gave it away, and then took it back. The Warriors were a team in this match, one player really didn't stand out and that seems to suit them best. They have some small things to work on, but they played well against Austin.

Austin seems to be a second half team and that is also their downfall. If they get too far behind in games, they won't be able to come back. While they were able to overpower NOLA last week, they couldn't repeat their performance this week. They couldn't capitalize on Utah's mistakes and made too many mistakes of their own. They'll have to regroup and get ready for their next match.

Austin is back in two weeks as they host the San Diego Legion in the CBS Sports Game of the Week. Utah is back next week as they travel to Seattle to take on the Seawolves.
