MLR Week One Winners & Losers

Week One of Major League Rugby is in the books. You can read our quick recap of the week one action here. After this week's action here are the winners and losers from this week's action.

Adriaan Booysen - The Namibian number 8 was the SaberCats impact player against the Raptors. He was arguably the best player on the field against the Raptors. Looking forward to more from Booysen.

Cam Dolan - The Eagles number 8 showed his class against Old Glory DC. He finished with a hat trick, was a part of the dominant Gold scrum, and was an overall menace on the pitch against DC.

Utah Warriors - Some of you may be wondering why the Warriors are here since they lost. Well it's based on preseason perceptions. Utah had some very worrisome things come out of their exhibition action. However they showed, at least for a little while, that they shouldn't be counted out of anything just yet.

New England Free Jacks - If it weren't for NOLA, New England arguably could've had the most dominant matches of the week. The Free Jacks were able to battle the windy conditions on their way to a 34-14 win.

Game of the Week - The championship rematch between San Diego and Seattle lived up to the hype. Seattle got it started early and came back near the end, but the Ma'a Nonu and the Legion were too much in the end.

Toronto - The Toronto Arrows picked up where they left off last season. They dominated the Gilgronis from beginning to end in this match. The Arrows may arguably be the best team top to bottom in this league.

Raptors Discipline - The Raptors had their opportunities to score or stop the SaberCats from scoring, but they couldn't get out of their own way. They couldn't hang onto the ball and kept committing silly breakdown penalties that cost them the match.

Old Glory DC Front Row - Old Glory was missing two starters from the front row. However, how much impact they will actually have remains to be seen. Against NOLA, they got bullied all over the field from whistle to whistle.

Rugby ATL ESPN+ Broadcast - For US fans of Major League Rugby watching the ATL-Utah match on ESPN+ looked like they were watching a club match filmed on a handheld camera. Eventually they got it figured out, but it's not the best look for the league.

Rugby United New York - Did we witness the SpaceBalls stunt doubles version of RUNY here? New York is a very talented team, but it didn't look like it against New England. RUNY needs to wake up if they want to get back to the playoffs.

Seattle Discipline - Seattle had the momentum in the latter stages of their match against San Diego. Too many breakdown penalties and a yellow card to Vili Toluta'u cost them a potential victory and losing bonus point.

Austin - The Austin Gilgronis looked like the bottom of the table team we've seen the past two MLR seasons. The only good thing to come from this match for Austin was the pre-match light show.
